I am not a Dalit chintak, I don’t associate my identity with any caste or religion or class just because I don’t want my personal identity to be shunned and I do not belong to any group, refined and ornamented fighting for minority-justice. “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member” ( You dare not touch my moustache! Smeh!).
Rohit Vemula, may you not rest in peace! Haunt the system, the hypocrites and bystanders, haunt every one of us who’re conscious and silent on institutional murders, caste politics and obscure untouchability. Let us not forget that we live in India where we have ‘Dalit Gods’ outside main shrines, ‘Dalit Christians’ who take a back seat in Churches, ‘Dalit vote banks’ easily flexible to any political ideology and ‘Dalit concessions’ in schools and colleges where general public say “you people ruin academic standards with your reservation." To be precise, all institutions have an exclusionary system that divides and will continue to sideline what our constitution calls a minority.
We have Ambedkar Jayanthi, International Commission for Dalit Rights (ICDR), Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle (APSC), countless seminars and discussions on Dalit Literature etc but we also have a population that responds after a disastrous murder- “He’s not even Dalit/ This is not a Dalit issue” “ Woah, he speaks good English” “ Its a matter of depression” ( I don't want to pick names.) Rohit Vemuls and Anil Kumar Meenas are there, across the country and as citizens of a ‘noble state’ what we can do is to stop segregate, clear our brains and educate people around us, appreciate a beautiful mind that thinks rather than his skin colour or occupation or caste or religion, we live in the 21st century if you remember.
